NUMERPLATE.CO.UK TERMS AND CONDITIONS
## 1. Introduction
Numerplate.co.uk is an online UK-based marketplace for listing DVLA-issued private (personalised) number plates. This document (“Terms”) governs the use of our website and services. By accessing or using numerplate.co.uk (the “Platform”), you agree to abide by these Terms. The Platform simply displays listings of number plates offered for sale by third-party sellers; it is not a party to any sale or transfer of ownership. The UK Government explicitly allows private owners to sell personalised registrations, provided the plate is properly assigned to the buyer’s vehicle. You should therefore deal directly with Sellers and ensure any transfer follows DVLA rules.
## 2. Our Role and Platform Use
Numerplate.co.uk is a passive listing service only. We do not act as an agent, broker or escrow for any transaction. We do not process payments, collect or hold any personal buyer data beyond what Sellers include in their public listings. Any agreement for sale of a number plate is exclusively between the Buyer and Seller, and not with the Platform. We make no representations about the accuracy of any listing content. You acknowledge that all listings are provided by Sellers “as is,” and we expressly disclaim any responsibility for user-supplied content. For example, other marketplaces similarly state they are “not responsible for third party conduct or statements” and are “not liable for damages of any kind” caused by user content. In short, you use the Platform at your own risk: we do not guarantee the identity or honesty of any Seller or Buyer, nor do we guarantee that any sale will complete.
## 3. Listings, Fees and Review
Sellers pay a non-refundable £15 listing fee to submit a number plate for review and publication. This fee is charged upon submission and covers the cost of our manual review process. As with other marketplaces, we clearly state any fees so that users “know what to expect”. The fee is generally non-refundable, even if the listing is declined or later removed, because it is earned upon processing the submission. (We may refund only at our discretion or if required by law, for example if we fail to review your listing within a reasonable time.)
All listings are subject to approval. We manually review each submission, but approval is not guaranteed. We reserve the right to refuse or remove any listing that violates these Terms or applicable law. Payment of the listing fee does not ensure publication. Only after a listing is approved and published will it appear on the Platform. We will attempt to notify you if we decline or remove your listing, but we have no obligation to do so.
## 4. Seller Warranties and Responsibilities
If you list a number plate for sale, you warrant and represent that: (a) you are the lawful owner or have the full legal right and DVLA authorization to sell the plate; (b) the plate is a genuine DVLA-issued private registration and not a replica or otherwise illegal; (c) the plate is not currently marked “non‑transferrable” in its V5C logbook or otherwise disqualified from transfer; (d) if the plate is held on a DVLA certificate of entitlement (V750 or V778), that certificate is valid (not expired) and you are the original grantee or have the grantee’s full consent; (e) the vehicle from which the plate is coming still exists (plates become void if the vehicle has been scrapped); and (f) the vehicle satisfied all DVLA requirements (e.g. MOT, tax) at the time of any transfer application. In other words, you must meet all DVLA conditions for selling a private plate (for example, a plate that is marked “non‑transferrable” on the V5C cannot be sold). These obligations flow from DVLA guidance and UK law.
You also warrant that any information and images you include in your listing are accurate, truthful and not misleading. Sellers must not fabricate details about the age, history or status of the plate, and must not sell a plate that they do not lawfully possess. Note that we do not require you to upload DVLA documents, and you should never publicly disclose or upload scans of official papers. For example, DVLA guidance explicitly warns “Do not share a photograph or scan of the V750 or V778 document” because others could fraudulently use it. Accordingly, any attempt to upload DVLA ownership or entitlement documents (such as V750 or V778 forms, V5C logbooks, etc.) in your listing is strictly prohibited.
You are responsible for the content of your listing and for complying with all applicable laws. You must provide a contact email or phone number, price and any plate details required by law, and must respond honestly to inquiries. Numerplate.co.uk is not liable for any Seller misrepresentation or error. Sellers agree to indemnify and hold the Platform harmless from any claims arising out of their listings or transactions.
## 5. Prohibited Conduct
When using the Platform, you must not engage in any unlawful or inappropriate conduct. Prohibited actions include, without limitation:
Unauthorized documents: Uploading or sharing any official DVLA documents or scans (e.g. V750 entitlement or V778 retention certificates) is strictly forbidden.
Misrepresentation: Listing a plate with false or misleading information (for example, claiming a plate is DVLA-issued when it is not, or hiding that it is non-transferable) is prohibited. You may not list plates that you do not own or that you are not legally entitled to sell, or that are marked “non-transferrable”.
* Illegal plates: You may not offer stolen, cancelled, fake, or otherwise illegal registration numbers. If a plate was revoked, issued fraudulently, or is subject to dispute, you must not list it.
* Privacy and contact: You must not harvest other users’ personal information, send spam or harassing messages, or otherwise misuse contact details. Sellers may share only the contact information they themselves provide in the listing.
* Defamatory/obscene content: Listings must not contain pornography, hate speech, defamation, or any content that violates law or rights of third parties.
* Circumventing fees or rules: Do not attempt to avoid payment of the listing fee, circumvent our review process (for example by repeatedly submitting the same plate), or manipulate the listing system.
* Other illicit acts: You may not use the Platform to facilitate fraud, harassment, money laundering, terrorism, or any criminal activity.
We reserve the right to remove any listing or suspend any user account that violates these rules. Note that we do not routinely verify every listing for compliance, so it is the community’s responsibility to report prohibited content. However, reporting or takedown requests do not transfer liability away from users – all users must still follow these Terms.
## 6. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability
The Platform and its content are provided “as is” and “as available,” with all faults. We make no representations or warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We specifically disclaim any warranty of accuracy, reliability, timeliness or merchantability, and we do not guarantee that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free or meet your expectations. We have no obligation to monitor or correct user content.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event will numerplate.co.uk (or its owners and operators) be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special or punitive damages arising out of your use of the Platform, even if we were advised of the possibility of such damages. This includes damages for fraudulent claims, non-payment, faulty transfers, incorrect listings, or any other loss relating to a transaction between users. We are not responsible for any failure of a sale, for any seller-buyer dispute, or for any consequences of a number plate transfer. For example, we disclaim liability for any “inaccurate content” or “misleading or false information” posted by users, and generally follow the practice of shifting risk to users for third-party content. Under no circumstances will our aggregate liability to you exceed the amount of the listing fee paid (i.e. £15). These limitations apply even if any exclusive remedy fails of its essential purpose.
Nothing in these Terms excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud or any other liability which cannot be excluded or limited by law. However, subject to those exceptions, the Platform’s liability is strictly limited as above.
## 7. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of the Platform shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
## 8. Changes to Terms
We may modify these Terms from time to time. Revised Terms will be effective when posted on the Site with a new “Last Updated” date. Your continued use of numerplate.co.uk after any change signifies your acceptance of the updated Terms.
